What is dentin tubule?

Dentin tubules are microscopic channels that run through the dentin layer of a tooth. They are formed when odontoblasts, specialized cells in the pulp of the tooth, create processes that extend into the dentin layer. These tubules contain both water and a variety of proteins that can be sensitive to different stimuli like pressure, temperature, or chemical changes. The tubules are important because they allow nutrients to flow from the pulp to the rest of the tooth, which helps maintain the tooth’s health and vitality. However, when the dentin layer is exposed due to gum recession or tooth decay, the open tubules can transmit sensations of pain or sensitivity to the nerve in the pulp, which can cause discomfort for the patient.
